Jewish-Canadian F1 driver Lance Stroll, and his German teammate Sebastian Vettel, capitalised on errors from Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, to finish sixth and eighth respectively, in a massive result for Aston Martin at last Sunday’s rain-affected 2022 Singapore Grand Prix.

Stroll started the race in 11th place, but finished with his top placing so far this season, to earn eight competition points.

Reaching a top speed of 296.6km/h, Stroll crossed the finish line just 56.330 seconds behind the winner, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who was previously Stroll’s teammate at Aston Martin.

Six drivers did not finish the race, including four who crashed, and two who had engine trouble.

Stroll said post-race, “It feels so good to pick up sixth place tonight, which is my best result of the season, and it was also a good day for Seb, so we have come away with a big bunch of points.

“That is great for everybody in the team who is working so hard.

“It was a tricky race – the track surface was very slippery for the whole race, and it was not easy to stay out of trouble.

“It was just a case of waiting for the areas with the new asphalt to dry out, before the switch to slicks [tyres], which we timed really well.

“We have moved up in the teams’ championship, which is important, and [got] a nice boost as we enter the final part of the season.”

The team’s principal, Mike Krack, said, “Lance drove fast, yet patiently, to sixth place. We have climbed a couple of places in the constructors’ world championship [ninth place to seventh], and this is a welcome reward for the steady progress we have been making recently.”

The next F1 race will be the Japanese Grand Prix on October 9.
