‘Absolutely appalled’

Sunshine Coast MP targeted with antisemitic graffiti

Sunshine Coast MP Andrew Wallace has condemned his political signs being defaced with Nazi symbols, describing it as evidence of Australia’s “worsening antisemitism crisis”.

Several of Wallace’s election signs were vandalised with the banned Nazi Hakenkreuz over the weekend, sparking significant public outcry in the typically peaceful coastal community.

“I have never seen antisemitism as widespread and prevalent on the Sunshine Coast as we are experiencing today. Online and on our streets, we are confronting an antisemitism crisis – and it’s only getting worse,” Wallace warned.

The Fisher MP, who serves as deputy chair of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee and chair of the Australia-Israel Allies Caucus, has been a prominent voice against antisemitism and a stanch supporter of Israel in the parliament.

“Bigger cities might be accustomed to this kind of thing, but here on the Sunshine Coast, we have prided ourselves on being the most secure, welcoming, and thoughtful community. I’m absolutely appalled by this behaviour,” Wallace said.

He has reported the incidents to Queensland Police, urging them to “undertake whatever means necessary to arrest these brazen criminals who seek to divide our nation and make it less secure.”

Wallace criticised the current government’s response to rising antisemitism, stating, “Australia’s antisemitism crisis demands strong leadership, and Anthony Albanese, supported by his Teal and Green allies, has proven incapable and in fact, unwilling, to stand up to antisemitism and hate.”

He referenced previous antisemitic incidents including the infamous October 9, 2023 protest at the Sydney Opera House and the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in December 2024, which he compared to Kristallnacht.

Wallace highlighted the LNP’s plan to address antisemitism, which includes establishing an antisemitism taskforce, deporting visa holders involved in antisemitic acts, prioritising antisemitic offences, establishing a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on university campuses, and providing funding for security and rebuilding efforts for the Jewish community.

“It’s time for Australians to stand up, speak up, and show up for the Jewish community. Report graffiti and all forms of antisemitism to the police and stamp it out in conversation and online,” Wallace concluded.

The vandalism comes after Liberal candidate for Kooyong in Victoria, Amelia Hamer’s signs were vandalised with “from the river to sea” last week.
