Israeli initiative Esek was recently in Australia showcasing Israeli products and the stories of the creators behind them.

Esek, meaning “business” in Hebrew, was founded in 2024 to champion Israeli small business, providing an e-commerce platform where people can buy Israeli products and have them shipped for free internationally. It currently represents around 50 Israeli businesses.

“Israel is home to nearly 700,000 small businesses, which are the lifeblood of families, neighbourhoods and entire communities,” Esek states on its website. “By choosing Esek, you’re not just buying a product; you’re making a meaningful connection. You’re supporting the dreams of artisans, innovators, and entrepreneurs who pour their heart into their craft.”

Esek co-founder Ofek Moscovich ran a stall at last month’s Sydney Jewish Food Festival – a Shalom Collective event – offering a range of products made in Israel, from Shalva tea to Kibbutz Erez cold-pressed olive oil.

Speaking to Moscovich in Melbourne, he said it has been “game changing in the small business community, because we’re doing something really unique”.

“We’re not only showing them on the platform, we’re actually buying everything from them,” Moscovich explains. “We’re paying them up front, giving them financial stability and telling them, don’t worry … you do what you do well, make your art … we’re going to take care of the rest.”

Esek has two special initiatives – a reserve soldier collection, and a Nova collection with curated works by 10 Israeli artists who survived the Nova music festival.

“Every piece in the Nova Collection carries a story,” Esek says on its website.

“From ceramics to Judaica to paintings, these works reflect both the trauma of loss and the strength to rebuild. Each artist shares their personal journey through short video profiles, offering a window into their experience on October 7th and their creative path since. By purchasing from the Nova Collection, you are not only acquiring a one-of-a-kind piece of art – you are directly supporting the livelihoods of Nova survivors, by helping them to rebuild, succeed and contribute to Israel’s cultural and economic future.”
