About 50 people participated in the Sydney chapter of the MS Australia Maccabi National Swimathon on Sunday, February 20, raising more than $23,000 through sponsorship for both Maccabi Australia and Australians living with multiple sclerosis.

Maccabi Life NSW coordinator Amanda Penkin was impressed by the terrific response by the participants, and their sponsors, given the event had been postponed from its usual slot late last year due to COVID-related restrictions.

“I’m constantly amazed and encouraged by the community spirit shown by our Maccabi NSW community,” said Penkin.

People of all ages took part in the swimathon.

For the 11th year of this annual event that combines fun and fitness with fundraising, the Sydney event included the usual swimathon component of completing laps, which was done by about two dozen swimmers of all ages at Kincoppal Rose Bay’s indoor pool.

But it also featured a walkathon/runathon at Centennial Park which drew more than 25 participants.

And keen open water swimmer Vanessa Levy opted to raise funds by diving into Sydney Harbour to do her laps.

A dozen Maccabi NSW volunteers and staff helped to organise and run the event.

Participant Janine Kovkin summed it up perfectly: “It was a wonderful morning and a fantastic cause. Well done to everyone!”
