FOOTBALL

Maccabi-Hakoah juniors super in semis

Maccabi-Hakoah Junior FC is having one of its best season results in the Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA), with 6 out of a possible 10 junior teams from the club making it through to this weekend’s grand finals, after winning semi-final matches last weekend.

It was a tremendous result, and it could have been 8 junior teams from the Jewish club playing in deciders, with 2 of them losing by the narrowest of margins in their semis, but their players and coaches can hold their heads high for the effort they’ve put in.

For Maccabi-Hakoah’s Miniroos teams, last weekend saw the last matches played for the main winter season – an occasion that was thoroughly enjoyed, whether the teams posted wins, draws or losses.

It turned out that the majority of their teams finished with wins, including the U9 Maccabi-Hakoah Hawks, who defeated Pagewood 1-0.

In what’s been a season featuring regular disruptions due to rain, field closures – and unavailability due to bouts of COVID, flu, and travel commitments – both the club’s junior and men’s teams were heavily impacted.

Of Maccabi-Hakoah FC’s 5 senior teams in the ESFA competition, just their over-45 men’s division 1 side has qualified for the upcoming semi-finals.

Although their division 2 men’s team can count themselves unlucky, having missed out on advancing by just 1 competition point, while being unable to play in a recent match due to it being cancelled because of rain.

JUNIOR BASKETBALL

Boys teams heading to grand finals

Mazal tov, and good luck, to the two Maccabi NSW Basketball boys’ teams who have earned their place in this weekend’s City of Sydney term 3 junior season grand finals.

In U18s, the Maccabi Heat are through in division 4 after winning their semi-final last Saturday by 36-21 against the Reddam Grizzlies.

And in U16s, the undefeated Maccabi U16 Kings are feeling confident, after winning their division 4 semi against the Newtown Tigers 43-25.

SWIMMING

NSW short course results

Some top-10 placings, and a stack of PB times, were achieved by Jewish swimmers representing several Sydney clubs at the 2022 NSW Senior State Age Short Course Swimming Championships earlier this month at Homebush.

Cranbrook Aquatics rep Savanna Goldring posted short course PBs of 1:20.18 in the 15 girls’ 100 breastroke, and 2:48.82 in the 200 breaststroke, to place 18th and ninth respectively.

Her clubmate Samuel Kaplan beat his seed times in the 16 boys’ backstroke (2:14.49) to finish 15th, and in the 100 free (55.06), to come 21st.

Cody Davis was a member of Cranbrook Aquatics’ 16 boys’ relay team that came 18th in the 100 backstroke.

City of Sydney swimmer Alex Thompson came ninth and set PB times in both the 17-18 boys’ 100 breaststroke (1:07.44) and the 100 individual medley (58.50).

Maya Antonir swam in two 4×50 13-15 girls’ relays for City of Sydney, where her team placed 20th in the medley race, and 23rd in the freestyle race.

Randwick City swimmer Elodie Jewell beat her seed time to place 23rd in the 15 girls’ 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 1:09.79.

MACCABI NSW

Register for spring holidays mega camp

Are you a parent of a student in years 3-6, seeking to keep your energetic child entertained in the spring school holidays?

Then Maccabi has a fun, sporty and social solution.

After running a successful sports mega camp back in April, attended by 160 participants across three days, Maccabi NSW is doing it all again, from September 28-30, between 9am and 3pm.

Moriah College will be the venue for the day camp, featuring morning games of football, basketball and netball, followed by afternoon social activities such as laser tag, swimming-based games, and time at Archie Brothers in Alexandria.

Maccabi encourages participants of all abilities to take part, and plans on organising transport for upper north shore kids via Masada College.

Youth officer and mega camp coordinator, Ethan Rosmarin, said, “After two disruptive years due to COVID, we are so excited to run our second mega camp for the year”.

“The level of fun and energy is going to be great!”

An early bird discount rate offer for the event has been extended until Monday, August 29, and places are limited, so it’s a good idea to register soon.
