AUSTRALIA’S Maccabiah Table Tennis team will play off in the gold medal match if it can beat Russia today. The trio of Dion Besser, Guy Fainbloom and Barak Mizrachi have had an outstanding tournament highlighted by a 3-2 win over Sweden.
Fainbloom, who has been rated one of the best players in the tournament, cruised through his two matches while Besser won the deciding match for his team with a thrilling 5-games win.
Mizrachi lost 3-1 to his Swedish opponent but was instrumental in the Aussies win.
The team went down to Israel, following the victory over the Swedes with Fainbloom taking the home nation’s top player to five games.
If Australia loses the semi-final to the Russians they will still contest the Bronze medal game.
The junior table tennis team finished bottom of their pool and will play off for 9th or 10th place.
