Taking it to the streets

A MARCHING band, stilt walkers, jugglers and clowns will walk alongside Jewish youth when they hit the streets for this year’s Lag b’Omer parade and carnival to be held on Sunday, May 22.

Hosted by Chabad Youth NSW, the procession, which will also mark World Jewish Youth Day, will kick off at Bondi Beach Park, winding its way along Campbell Parade and Flood Street before its final stop at Barracluff Park on Warners Avenue.

The party will then continue with a fair, complete with live music, amusement rides, a magic show and food stalls.

“It’s fantastic. It’s getting out in the streets and displaying our Jewish pride. We can all be thankful for living in a country where we can celebrate our Jewishness in the most public of ways,” said Young Adult Chabad director Rabbi Eli Feldman.

The event’s organiser Rabbi Elimelech Levy added: “Be proud, be loud. Join the parade and fly the banner of freedom.”

But that’s not the only party in town. Emanuel Synagogue will host an evening of “music, meditation and kabbalah” for the 33rd day of the Omer, at the shul on Saturday from 7pm. Among those in attendance will be guitarist Ido Kahn, violinist Angelo Berardi and kabbalah scholar Dr Orna Triguboff.

On the same day, Newtown Synagogue will host a barbecue and bonfire starting from 6.30pm.

Central Synagogue will host a bonfire, barbecue and drumming circle on Sunday for kids aged 6-12 from 5.30pm, and later for young adults from 7pm.

Across the bridge, Chabad House of the North Shore will hold similar activities at the North Shore Jewish Community Centre from 4pm.

The youth movements will also be  getting into the action. Netzer willbe hosting a two-day Lag b’Omer tiyul, including hiking, programs and socialising. The first program will be for students in years 3-8 at North Shore Temple Emanuel starting on Friday at 6.30pm, while a second will be held for those in years 9-12 at Emanuel Synagogue starting on Saturday from 10am.

Betar will hold its festivities at North Shore Synagogue on Sunday from 3pm. Bnei Akiva, meanwhile, will get into the spirit with a Shabbaton weekend, including a bonfire and barbecue at Masada College. On Sunday at the same location, the youth movement will hold a trivia night for juniors and their families from 5.30pm.

The Lag b’Omer parade will begin at Bondi Beach Park on Sunday, May 22 at 10am. Enquiries: www.cyn.org.au; 0433 549 190.
