After a long winter, and enthusiastic pre-season training stint, Maccabi-AJAX Junior Cricket Club teams enjoyed playing their opening two rounds of the new season on October 9 and 16, albeit some matches were washed out.

There were many good performances in the first round, the pick being by U13B Giants bowler Toby Ritterman, who took 5 wickets for 8 runs in his U13 debut versus Caulfield, who won by 4 runs.

The U15B Maccabi Warriors had a narrow first round win against East Malvern Tooranga, with Benji Rostkier scoring an unbeaten 53 runs, and Yoni Moss 32.

In round 2 last Sunday, in an U13B grade Maccabi-AJAX derby, the Titans made 7/122, which proved too much for the Colts. Top-scorer for the Titans was Nathan Goldberg, with 31 runs off 24 balls.

In another derby, the U13 Warriors beat the Jets by 29 runs, while in U13 C grade, the Maccabi Raiders beat East Malvern Tooronga by 4 runs.

And the U13A Maccabi Chargers made 200 on the first day of their 2-day match versus Malvern. Miles Rubin scored 30 runs, and Jordan Suss was 27 not out.

The junior club’s president, Daniel Lowinger, said, “We have a record 7 U13 boys’ Maccabi-AJAX teams this season – the most in the competition – 6 U11 boys’ teams, a girls’ team , 2 U15 boys’ teams, and a combined Maccabi-Elsternwick U17 boys’ team, and our junior and Master Blasters programs have over 65 kids enrolled.

“The last 2 years have proven that parents want to get kids playing sport, and our club has invested heavily in coaching programs that allow the kids to have fun, and consistently improve.”

Lowinger added, the club recently hired Donna Gouldthorp as its girls’ head coach.

“Donna is there to improve the standard of girls’ cricket across the community, and has already been to a number of the Jewish schools, to encourage participation in that very important demographic.”
