Philanthropists Robert and Ruth Magid were this week bestowed honorary doctorates by Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

The honour is in recognition of their support of Jewish communities in Australia, Israel and around the world, in gratitude for their “relentless efforts” to promote the Technion and its scientific pursuits, in tribute to their success and accomplishments as business leaders and in appreciation of their “selfless commitment” to philanthropic causes and advocacy efforts.

The doctorates were inferred at the university’s board of governors meeting on Monday evening.

“Receiving an honorary doctorate from the Technion is extremely humbling,” Robert said.

“I have no words for the way I feel. It’s truly a highlight in my life.”

Ruth called it “a privilege beyond measure”.

The Magids have long been supporters of Technion, and the awards recognise their US $3 million support of the university’s undergraduate quantum science and technology programs.

“Israel has to be at the forefront of technology. It’s important to its survival,” Robert said.

“And the forefront is quantum, which will be as big a revolution as the digital revolution. We would like students at an undergraduate level to start to understand quantum and we need someone to sponsor these causes and I immediately put up my hand.”

Ruth added, “I admire the incredible creativity of the people who are at the Technion studying and teaching, and we are in awe of their achievements.

“We depend on them and we have complete faith that they will contribute to the wellbeing and security of the State of Israel.”

Technion Australia CEO Yoash Dvir said, “Technion Australia celebrates Robert and Ruth Magid’s tremendous achievement in receiving their honorary doctorate from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

“Their vision, passion, and support contributes to the future of Israel and its national security, and ensures it continues to be a world-leading innovation centre.”

The Magids are publishers of The AJN.
