“This has included a stronger security presence at schools, shuls, Jewish businesses and community events/functions,” CSG said in a statement, following the attack which saw a woman taken hostage, a man killed and three policemen injured just a short distance from the heartland of the community.
“We have asked community organisations for their upcoming activities so that we can provide adequate protection, advice and patrols,” CSG said.
The AJN understands CSG is concerned there could be others terrorists in the same cell and/or that the attack could inspire other like-minded terrorists to attack the community.
Monday’s attack in Melbourne, just two days after seven people were killed in a ramming and stabbing attack in London, appears to have been inspired by a recent ISIS magazine, which encouraged terrorists to keep victims alive and restrained, making for a more lengthy and drawn-out hostage scenario.
“One may then notify the authorities, explaining to them that he is a soldier of the Islamic State and informing them of what he has just done,” the article stated.
“The intention of this delay is therefore only to prolong the terror, as the ideal scenario is that they storm the location and he (the terrorist) is killed as a shahid [martyr].”
The community’s alert level in Sydney and Melbourne remained unchanged at high, which means that a terrorist attack is likely.
