The Australian Jewish News recognised in NSW Parliament
'The team have covered the attack and its aftermath with the sensitivity and gravitas it required, and they should be recognised for these efforts'
The Australian Jewish News has been recognised in the New South Wales Parliament for its reporting under difficult circumstances since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel and more recently, the Bondi Beach massacre.
In a Written Community Recognition Statement recorded in the Hansard last Tuesday, August 4, Opposition Leader and Member for Vaucluse Kellie Sloane recognised the “invaluable contribution” of this masthead.
“From its humble beginnings in 1895 as the Hebrew Standard of Australasia, The Australian Jewish News has become a quintessential part of the story of Australian Jewry, publishing local news and stories pertaining to the Jewish community, Israel, and community updates and announcements,” she wrote.
“The past two-and-a-half years have been an unprecedented time for the Jewish community, especially since the Chanukah by the Sea terror attack in December 2025 … The team have covered the attack and its aftermath with the sensitivity and gravitas it required, and they should be recognised for these efforts.
“I thank [Editor-in-chief] Gareth [Narunsky] and the entire team at The Australian Jewish News for their continued commitment to keeping the Jewish community informed, connected and engaged.”
Sloane also tabled a Written Community Recognition Statement paying tribute to the “outstanding contribution to the Jewish community and to the people of New South Wales” by outgoing NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip.
“Throughout his tenure he has led with dignity, compassion and unwavering conviction, particularly during a period of unprecedented grief, uncertainty and rising antisemitism,” she said. “As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks reminded us, true leadership is found in service to others. David has consistently demonstrated that principle by putting his community first and providing calm, principled leadership when it mattered most.
“While this chapter of his formal leadership comes to a close, I have no doubt his influence and service will continue for many years to come. I also wish to acknowledge David’s generosity of time, wise counsel and friendship to me, and I wish him all the very best as he approaches this next chapter.”
Sloane also acknowledged the not-for-profit Fashion Forward, who have raised $1 million to support women and children facing crisis.
“Fashion Forward operates by taking donated quality pre-loved designer clothing, selling it at accessible prices and then giving the proceeds to Jewish House who use it to support women and children from all backgrounds, cultures and religions who are facing homelessness and housing insecurity,” she wrote in a third Written Community Recognition Statement.
“Fashion Forward is a wonderful example of community, with donated premises, donated services and a dedicated volunteer workforce all working together to make the maximum impact.”
