The Maccabi Soccer Mums beat Hampton 6-1 last month, with Jennifer Rosenthal scoring four goals, and Hayley Molnar and Limor Bar Gad kicking one each.

The game was one of the first played in a tournament comprising soccer mums from affiliated clubs, getting women involved in soccer.

In December 2022, Maccabi Football Club Caulfield put out a call across their networks for expressions of interest for an initiative by Football Victoria called “Go Soccer Mums”.

The initiative aimed to offer a way for mums and women to have fun, meet new people and learn basic soccer skills in a social, judgement-free environment.

Now, Jewish women from across the community rock up on a Sunday night to do drills and a game, with equal parts of competitiveness and laughter.

While some of the players had never played before, the opportunity has empowered them to sharpen their skills and work with their teammates.

For Maccabi club president Kevin Milstein the idea has grown much bigger than the club could have anticipated.

“I was blown away by what this group had become even in just a few short weeks,” Milstein said.

While the social Sunday evenings are continuing, players who wish to play competitively in the Soccer Mums tournaments can take on an extra training evening during the week and matches on Sunday afternoons.

Sarah Favaloro, coach of the Maccabi Mums, is proud of what the team has achieved in a short time, and looks forward to seeing where else they will take it.

“It has been such a pleasure helping them develop their skills, seeing their sportswomanship in action and watching friendships grow – and all done against a backdrop of laughter and fun,” Favaloro said.

Maccabi FC “Go Soccer Mums” takes place on a Sunday evening at 7.30pm at Caulfield Park. For more information, or if you are interested in joining, email info@mfcc.com.au
