Now one of the US-based rabbis behind the Kosher Pickle Factory will be in Sydney and Melbourne for a series of hands-on pickle-making workshops.
Jewish House is bringing out Rabbi Mendy Margolin, aka Rabbi Pickle, to Australia from August 12-28.
Jewish House CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel, a self-confessed pickle fan, said: “Participants will learn the history behind the art of pickle-making, learn about each of the ingredients used and the method, and walk out of the workshop with their very own container of pickles.”
He said participants would also “gain an understanding of the kosher lifestyle and gain insight into the deeper meaning of many of the ingredients”.
In Sydney, pickle-making workshops will be held at Coles stores in Bondi Junction, as well as shuls, old-age homes and community organisations.
Rabbi Pickle will also take his Kosher Pickle Factory roadshow to a number of Jewish schools in both cities to teach children how to pickle their own cucumbers.
Participants will take home Rabbi Pickle’s famous recipe and a jar of their own home-made kosher pickles.
“Rabbi Pickle is an institution in America. Since the Kosher Pickle Factory began in 2005, 10,000 people have prepared personalised jars of pickles. Through our partnership with Coles and Trialia Foods Australia, we look forward to Rabbi Pickle reinvigorating the traditional art of transforming the humble cucumber into a gastronomic delight in Australia,” he said.
Rabbi Margolin said he is looking forward to his first trip to Australia.
“I have taught pickling to people in over 25 American states and provinces, including the home of pickles, New York. Many tell me that they have such fond memories of tasting their bubbas’ kosher pickles. Fortunately there has been a resurgence in interest in the art of pickling, and so this important part of our tradition will be preserved for future generations,” he said.
Workshops will be held at Coles Eastgate Bondi Junction on August 18 at 4pm and 5pm, and at Coles Westfield Bondi Junction from August 19-22 at 4pm and 5pm. The cost is $5 per person and includes a Coles discount voucher.
Rabbi Kastel reminded people that “If you are in a pickle,” call Jewish House’s 24/7 crisis line on 1300 544 357.
