The schools of rock battle it out
Bialik’s Held, Ella Wilson and Nick Levin worked together with Scopus students Maya Starr and Isaac Itesku over the course of almost an entire year to get the event off the ground.
At the start of term four last year, not long after October 7, Bialik College’s newly elected year 12 Mazki leaders approached the Mount Scopus Memorial College captains with the idea of holding a Battle of the Bands event.
Mazki leader Nathan Held suggested it could be something that would be enjoyable.
“But more because it would be an event based on unity,” he said. “At that tumultuously emotional time when everyone was unsure and did not know what really was happening, this was something good to do, to bring the Jewish schools together particularly in the arts.”
The Mount Scopus captains agreed.
Bialik’s Held, Ella Wilson and Nick Levin worked together with Scopus students Maya Starr and Isaac Itesku over the course of almost an entire year to get the event off the ground.
On the evening of Thursday August 29, the Battle began.
It was a sell-out event that raised $2500 for Magen David Adom in Israel.
There were five music categories; the 70s, instrumental, Hebrew, rock and same song where both schools bands played their interpretation of Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.
Both schools’ musicians were from years 7 to 12.
Past head of Bialik’s Parents Association Sally Robin was in the audience and said the event was inspiring and very positive.
“The youth came together with harmony and took the adults along with them.
“The fact that the entire event was student driven and performed was really positive, it was very collegiate and a great fun competition,” she added.
Mount Scopus Memorial College was declared the winning band.
At the end of the battle, both bands came together for a joint performance.
