THE winning plays of the Melbourne short-play festival Short+Sweet will be performed in Sydney, starting this week.¬†Plays to snare the top Short+Sweet awards in Melbourne included Adam Gelin’s Religion Shop, which won both the runner-up award for best comedy writing and the people’s choice award.¬†

Gelin, husband of Sydney’s Emanuel Synagogue Rabbi Jackie Ninio, is a Short+Sweet veteran, having won the best new talent and best director awards in previous years.¬†He is a regular actor in Emanuel’s Purim spiels and star of Kosher Theatreports.

Audiences will get to see Gelin’s hilarious half-satire on modern religion, half-deconstruction on 10-minute theatre, when it is performed as part of the Seymour Centre Downstairs Week 4 program from February 4-7, directed by Heath Wilder.

Other Jewish artists to feature in the Sydney line-up will be director Lisa Eisman, writer Jack Feldstein and actor Josh Futcher.¬†Mandragora is directed by Eisman, while Feldstein’s The Last Massacre will also be performed.¬†Futcher, who won the best actor gong in Melbourne, will appear with a stunning Melbourne cast under the direction of Helen Mcfarlane in Jane Miller’s hilarious send-up on corporate downsizing, Legends of the Fall.
