THE sins are in and they’re not pleasant. The AJN judging panel had a tough job choosing between the very worst 21st century sins, suggested by readers in our recent Yom Kippur competition, with entries including “wearing your Pradas in the rain”, “buying retail”, “not being a mensch” and “not checking Facebook for three or more days”.
But the winner of the coveted Glick’s voucher went to Rabbi Yaakov Glasman, for his modern-day take on adultery.
“Married men who fall in love with their Blackberries and spend more time with them than they do with their wives — they have transgressed the most heinous of the Ten Commandments: ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit Adult-Berry’,” Rabbi Glasman’s entry stated.
But being a grandson of Mr Glick himself, Rabbi Glasman didn’t take home the prize, instead choosing to donate it to the Jewish Taskforce Against Family Violence, who passed the baked goods on to needy families.
As for winning the title, Rabbi Glasman is humoured. “In most situations, I’d feel honoured to be decided the winner, but I don’t think honoured is quite the right word for this particular achievement,” the president of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria joked. “I’m not sure what it says about the state of the rabbinate when one of its members came up with the best idea for how to sin.”
In line with the times, there was a technology slant to many responses, including “logging on to the internet on Shabbat”, “talking on your mobile phone during a movie”, “praying on the High Holy Days from one’s iPhone” and “texting during Kol Nidrei”. Others included “not replying to your emails”, “deleting family from Facebook” and “answering your mobile phone in shul on Yom Kippur”.
And, being an AJN competition, many entries naturally revolved around food. Some included “not eating Glick’s bagels”, “over-eating”, “eating and enjoying your food when it’s not healthy”, “eating on Yom Kippur” and “bagel-ry — over-indulging on bagel toppings”.
