The Easts Basketball League junior season got underway for 20 Maccabi NSW Basketball Club teams last Sunday, from U8s to U16s, who got to play in their new-look Maccabi uniforms.

It was a great start for many of them, including the Maccabi Celtics, Lakers and Bullets, who all scored big wins in the U12 boys’ division, and are forming excellent combinations.

The biggest wins went to the Celtics over the Bronte Bulls by 51-14, and the Lakers who easily accounted for the Bondi Wolves 83-15.

In a boys’ U10 Maccabi derby, the Jets and Bucks had a 10-all draw.

Two Maccabi U14 girls’ teams faced off in the first round, with the Sparks winning a close match against the Storm by 19-12.

Both teams played an impressive brand of basketball for an opening round fixture, and can look forward to having a great term 1 competition.

Meanwhile in round 5 of the City of Sydney Basketball Association open men’s competitions, two out of three Maccabi teams won their Monday night matches.

In the Premier League, the Maccabi Lakers coasted to a much-needed 93-48 win versus the Camperdown Boosters at Comets Stadium, with Aidan Zlotnick nailing four 3-pointers in the first half to get his team off to a blistering start.

Zlotnick finished the game with 22 points to his name.

It was the Lakers’ second win of the season, elevating them to equal third place on the 10-team ladder approaching the competition’s halfway mark.

In Division 1, the Maccabi Kings proved too good for an older and depleted KHY squad, beating them 67-37.

Desi Kohn scored at will in the paint on his way to 14 points, and Larry Wagenheim (15 points) was in great form from the outside.

The Maccabi Rockets lost a one-point thriller versus Infinity, 55-56.

Rick Schlessinger top-scored for the Rockets with 14 points, including three 3-pointers.

The Kings are currently coming third, and the Rockets 10th, in the 11-team Division 1 league.

And in men’s masters basketball, Maccabi Yesterday’s Heroes defeated the Newtown Deuces 31-25 in B division last Sunday to rise to sixth place, and in C division, Maccabi Benny’s Ball edged the Inner City Hawks 30-26 to move up to fourth on the ladder.
