Liberal candidate Tim Wilson is running for the seat of Goldstein, looking to unseat independent Zoe Daniel. It was a seat Wilson won in 2016, was re-elected to in 2019 and lost in the 2022 federal election.

Asked by The AJN why he believes he is the best candidate for Goldstein, Wilson said, “I’m the only candidate that understands the full diversity of the community with a clear track record of delivery for the community, and in Canberra.”

As an MP, Wilson said he is most proud of “delivering marriage equality with the Australian people and listing Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organisations”. Wilson proposed to his partner in Parliament during a parliamentary debate on marriage equality.

Wilson’s main critique of Daniel is that “the community was sold a big promise, but there has been no delivery.”

He is critical of Daniel’s response to antisemitism. “I share the disappointment of many in the Jewish community that Zoe Daniel has failed to provide strong leadership in time of crisis. Goldstein has not experienced a local leader so weak since the electorate was established over 40 years ago.”

Wilson also criticised the Albanese government’s approach to antisemitism and Israel. “There has been a clear lack of leadership from Anthony Albanese and the Labor government. Jewish people in Goldstein continue to tell me that Labor failed them at a time when leadership was needed the most,” he said.

On Israel’s war against Hamas, Wilson commented, “All wars are terrible, but there is no moral equivalence between a liberal democratic state defending its citizens and sovereignty, and a terrorist organisation seeking to murder innocent civilians.”

Wilson believes the best way to counter antisemitism in Australia is with “clear leadership from the Prime Minister, state Premiers and local MPs, to call out behaviour such as that from the steps of Sydney’s Opera House, and Caulfield South’s Princes Park”.

“Only a Coalition government will show the strength and leadership needed to curb this out-of-control antisemitism crisis,” he remarked.

Wilson noted the Coalition has promised if elected it would convene a National Cabinet to combat antisemitism and extremism, create an antisemitism taskforce, prioritise addressing antisemitism, including unsolved antisemitic crimes, and would refer visa holders involved in acts of antisemitism for cancellation and deportation. The Coalition also pledged to establish a judicial inquiry into campus antisemitism and deliver $32.5 million for security funding.
