U14 Rockets win premiership

The Jets – coached by Gabriel Dukes and Matan Slonim – held the Demon Dogs to a 14-point half-time lead, but Bentleigh-Highett found an extra gear in the last two quarters, winning 7.14 (56) to 4.6 (30).

MazAl tov to the AJAX U14 Rockets, who defeated Beaumaris by 34 points in the 2023 SMJFL boys’ U14 division 4 decider last Sunday at Elwood Park to win a treasured flag.

Guided all season by coach Gabe Dukes, team manager Dion Wise and a crew of parent volunteers, the team rose to the big occasion.

Things were tight at half-time, with the second-placed Rockets only in front of the minor premiers by 26-24.

But in the decisive third quarter, they kept Beaumaris scoreless, while extending their lead by 12, and finished things off beautifully, booting four last quarter goals to one.

The final score was Rockets 9.10 (64), Beaumaris 4.6 (30).

Scoring goals for the Rockets were Yosef Bloom (2), Oliver Klinger (2), Zac Balter (2), Joshua Gillis, Mati Ainsworth and Dylan Roff.

In a true team effort, it was Josh Levy who earned the medal for best on ground in a grand final, followed closely by Daniel Dukes, Lucas Hyams, Joel Krause, Jarrad Miselowski and Hunter Owide.

The boys’ U15 division 5 grand final also featured an AJAX team, the second-placed Jets, who faced minor premiers the Bentleigh-Highett Demon Dogs at Murrumbeena Park.

The Jets’ goals were scored by Sebastian Banky, Noa Fridman, Jesse Trayer and Felix Fink.

Their top six best on ground were Banky, Fink, Levi Katz, Harry Pack, Adam Parasol and Ari Younger.
