Unwavering dedication to her sacred work
Rebbetzin Lewis, the head of the female division of the IDF Chevra Kadisha, has spent years in the sacred duty of caring for the bodies of Israel's fallen soldiers.
Caulfield Shule was recently privileged to host Rebbetzin Noa Lewis as scholar-in-residence.
Rebbetzin Lewis, the head of the female division of the IDF Chevra Kadisha, has spent years in the sacred duty of caring for the bodies of Israel’s fallen soldiers.
Since being called to duty on October 7, she has witnessed some of the most horrific scenes imaginable.
Despite this, she continues to approach her work with deep care, dignity and empathy, infused with unwavering faith and strength.
Her visit to Australia was nothing short of inspiring, uplifting all who had the opportunity to hear her speak.
Rebbetzin Lewis’s commitment to her role is deeply personal.
Her husband and several of her sons are currently serving in the IDF, and it was with their encouragement that she accepted the invitation to come to Australia.
They urged her to share the important work being done in Israel and to provide a first-hand account of the events that have unfolded.
Their support underscores the significance of her mission and the impact her words have had on our community.
One of the most poignant moments during Rebbetzin Lewis’s presentation was when she described hearing the prayer for the IDF sung by Caulfield Shule’s chazzan, Dov Farkas.
She noted that it was one of the most moving renditions she had ever heard, highlighting how we are truly one people, one family, and how deeply our community in Australia cares for our brothers and sisters in Israel.
Rebbetzin Lewis considers her work to be holy, viewing it as a privilege to ensure that each soldier is treated with the utmost respect and care in the lead-up to their funeral.
She and her team work tirelessly to identify each individual, utilising all available resources to carry out this sacred task.
Beyond her role in the Chevra Kadisha, Rebbetzin Lewis also supports the families of soldiers and plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between Charedi families and the IDF.
Reflecting on her visit, Rabbi Daniel Rabin shared, “Rebbetzin Noa Lewis’s visit has left an indelible mark on our community.
“Her strength, faith and unwavering dedication to her sacred work have inspired us all. We are deeply grateful for her presence and the light she has brought into our lives.
“We also wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Katriel and Chana Warlow-Shill for their generous support in bringing Rebbetzin Lewis to Australia.”
Rebbetzin Lewis’s visit included a number of talks in both Melbourne and Sydney.
