Rheumatologist Dr Robert Baume and his wife Dr Ruth Selig, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, have launched Virtual Volunteering, a unique way for Australian doctors to support Hadassah Medical Centre.

Through Virtual Volunteering, doctors donate the proceeds of their working days, ranging from a few days to a month, to fund emergency medical programs at Hadassah Hospital and Hadassah’s Gandel Rehabilitation Centre.

Although many doctors in the Diaspora might want to be on the ground in Israel, logistical challenges often make this impossible. Virtual Volunteering allows them to contribute financially while continuing their practice at home.

This approach ensures they can maintain their practices in Australia while making a significant impact on healthcare in Israel.

Virtual Volunteering is more than a concept; it’s a special bond between Australia and the Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem.

By donating the proceeds of their working days, doctors can fund emergency medical programs where they are most needed, in the hospital and the Gandel Rehabilitation Centre, while continuing to see their patients in Australia.

“Ruth and I feel that our contribution is in lieu of actually going to Israel and performing medical duties which would be a logistical nightmare and a lot less effective,” explained Baume.

He emphasises the effectiveness of this initiative, stating, “It is our duty as doctors to provide medical services to Israel in its greatest hour of need, and this is an effective and efficient way of doing so.”

Israel’s Hadassah is more than a hospital – it is an inspirational beacon of healing and recovery,

Dr Baume highlights the profound impact Australian doctors can have on the rehabilitation of wounded Israeli soldiers treated at Hadassah and urges others to join in this meaningful cause. “Our contribution aids in the rehabilitation of wounded Israeli soldiers, which is incredibly fulfilling. I feel that in this way I am truly helping my ‘greater family’, the people of Israel,” he said.

Their initiative urgently calls for support from doctors and the wider community.

By becoming a “virtual volunteer” and contributing to the Hadassah Emergency Appeal, individuals can play a crucial role in saving lives and aiding in rehabilitation.

Hadassah Australia president Ron Finkel had the honour of presenting a certificate of recognition to Baume and Selig.

This acknowledgement – on behalf of Professor Yoram Weiss, director-general of Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem and the entire Hadassah medical team, celebrates the couple’s innovative ‘Virtual Volunteering’ initiative and their fundraising efforts during a critical emergency for Israel.
