THE Maccabi Warriors registered their third victory for the year, after trumping Casey Cavaliers 83-70 in an impressive display at Bialik Stadium on the weekend.

Though the team still sits on the bottom of the Big V Division Two ladder, the win does give it a much-needed confidence boost, especially with most of the squad preparing for next month’s Maccabiah Games.

In one of the side’s best performances for the year, the Warriors dominated the boards and shot 45 per cent from the field, including eight threes.

Big men Adam Laitt (20 points, 10 rebounds), Dean Rzechta (16 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists) and Jeremy Dukes (seven points, 14 rebounds) led the way, while guards Benji Tamir (12 points) and Jeff Devers (16 points) were at their damaging best.

Maccabi has been plagued by slow starts throughout the season, but the side was switched on from the first whistle in this game, racing out to a 21-10 lead at the first break.

But the home side’s intensity and accuracy dropped in the second period, allowing Casey to reduce the deficit to just two points at the main break.

The Warriors were able to lift after half-time, putting in one of their best quarters for the year.

The side pulled in 16 rebounds and passed and controlled the ball well, accumulating in 22 points, while conceding just 11 at the other end as its lead was stretched back out to 13 at three-quarter-time.

The hosts were able to hold off a fast-finishing opposition in the final stanza, with both sides hitting 24 points each as Maccabi was able to hold on for the comfortable win.

Maccabi plays Shepparton Gators at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 15 at Shepparton Basketball Stadium.
