Maccabeats and Purim

We don’t talk about Haman

Chag Purim Sameach to all our readers.

The Encanto obsession is real and the We Don’t Talk About Bruno is even more real. Which is why it only makes sense that the Maccabeats have come out with a fantastic Encanto-themed Purim mash-up.

They’re the kings of Jewish a Capella and they’re really bringing the drama with their latest parody, even evoking Lin-Manuel Miranda’s production style. There are Hamilton-esque dance numbers – slow motion fight scenes and colonial soldier uniforms – dramatic shots and detailed references to the Megillah.

What’s different about this parody though is its focus on the females behind Purim, especially Queen Esther. While it opens with Esther playing an intense game of cheese against villainous Haman, the mash-up soon moves to the Maccabeats updating Esther about Haman’s evil plan to convert or kill the Jews, singing “standing at the gate, idol around his neck. If you don’t bow down, you might just be next”.

In their own unique way, the Maccabeats detail the full story of Purim, as Esther mulls on the decision she must make, pacing back and forth while they sing – does she risk her life to save her tribe – right through to the confrontation with King Achashverosh, when Esther finds her feet and her confidence to demand that something be done to save the Jewish people.

It’s sure to be a big hit with all the kids – and parents – who simply can’t get the tunes of Disney’s latest blockbuster out of their heads.
