What’s in a Jewish name?

BIBLICAL favourite Jacob was 2010’s most frequently chosen Jewish-Australian baby name, according to birth announcements in The AJN.

BIBLICAL favourite Jacob was 2010’s most frequently chosen Jewish-Australian baby name, according to birth announcements in The AJN.

For girls, Mia was the most-loved name of parents in both Melbourne and Sydney, followed closely by Zoe and Noa.
Celebrities were the source of some baby names. Bailey, fashion designer Stella McCartney’s daughter; Beau, the choice of Spice Girl Emma Bunton; and Eddy, songstress Celine Dion’s son’s name, all featured.

While some parents looked to the Hollywood hills, many others looked to the pages of Judaism’s sacred books. Asher, Raphael, Benjamin, Rachel, Leah and Sara were all born to Jewish parents in 2010.

But Biblical favourite Joshua appeared out of favour in 2010.

The name was ranked number one in 2009, according to Sydney and Melbourne birth announcements. However, in 2010, it was not as popular, with only three announcements in both states, sending it down the list of names.

Parents looking for their children to stand out from the crowd decided on more exotic monikers. Winter Star, Reef, Huxley, Milo, Ref and Ziggy, which cropped up twice, were some of the more unusual names.

Others names included Pepper, Fox, Mika and Ryder in Melbourne, while in Sydney a Pheonix, Ignse, Temima, Cisco and Altai were all born.

This year’s state-wide statistics are yet to be announced, but according to Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria, the most popular names in the state for 2009 were Olivia for girls and William for boys. In NSW in 2009, William was also most often chosen for boys, with Isabella top for girls.

The most popular names were collated from The AJN’s birth notices of babies born in Melbourne and Sydney during 2010.
