irst, we must acknowledge the profound sadness and devastation experienced by the children and families at the centre of the recent childcare abuse scandal. The harm inflicted is unimaginable, and no parent should ever have to question whether their child was safe in someone else’s care. Our hearts are with those affected.

The case – involving over 70 charges of child abuse against a childcare worker – has shocked the nation. While this incident did not occur in a Jewish setting, its lessons are universal and urgent.

Abuse happens when safeguarding is not taken seriously, when policies are outdated, when organisations are complacent, and when concerns are silenced. The Jewish community cannot afford to assume it won’t happen here.

We need a Jewish safeguarding unit – now

At present, there is no culturally specific safeguarding unit for the Jewish community in Australia. This is a serious gap.
