Foreign Minister Penny Wong has condemned the horrific terrorist attack in Jerusalem that killed six people and wounded 12 others, declaring that “terrorism can never be justified”.

Two Palestinian gunmen from the West Bank opened fire on vehicles and pedestrians at Ramot Junction in Jerusalem on Monday morning Israel time, targeting people waiting at a bus stop and passengers on a bus that had just arrived.

“Australia condemns the horrific shooting attack in Jerusalem today that has left at least five people dead,” Wong said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims and those injured.”

The attack occurred shortly after 10am when the terrorists arrived at the busy junction and began shooting indiscriminately. A soldier and several civilians at the scene returned fire, killing both attackers.

The victims were named as Levi Yitzhak Pash, 57, Yaakov Pinto, 25, Yisrael Matzner, 28, Rabbi Yosef David, 43, Rabbi Mordechai Steintzag, 79, and Sarah Mendelson, 60.
