Woolworths has partnered with local food relief organisation Our Big Kitchen (OBK) in the lead up to Rosh Hashanah, with a number of Woolworths supermarkets in Sydney collecting food items over the next month.

Until Sunday, September 19, collection boxes will be at Woolworths supermarkets in Bondi Junction, Double Bay and St Ives, where customers can donate dry goods to support the organisation in its efforts to provide meals for thousands of New South Wales residents.

Yosi Barukh, kosher specialist at Woolworths, said, “We wish all of our customers a Happy Rosh Hashanah. It’s a special moment for the Jewish community and we’re excited to be able to offer a number of specials on kosher products for the occasion.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve been working hard to expand our range of Kosher products to cater for the local community and have almost doubled the number of products on offer. For Rosh Hashanah we’ll have matzah ball mix, chicken frames, baklava, round raisin challah, Jesse’s honey cake and pomegranates.

Our Big Kitchen distributes over 120,000 meals each year and has partnered with Woolworths ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

“We would like to thank our customers for their generous donations, helping Our Big Kitchen in the incredible work they do throughout the year to support those in need.”

Our Big Kitchen is a community-run industrial kitchen where meals are prepared for distribution.

The organisation was founded in 2005 by Rabbi Dr Dovid Slavin and his wife Laya Slavin after their community had gathered to cook for a local family in need.

Struck by the impact communal cooking could have on people’s lives, Our Big Kitchen was created and now distributes over 120,000 meals each year.

Rabbi Slavin said, “Food security is not an issue that one person can solve, it’s a team effort, and that’s what makes this partnership special. Rosh Hashanah is also a time for families, and we want to make sure everyone can enjoy this time.”

Kosher products can be found throughout the year in a selection of Woolworths supermarkets. For Double Bay, Bondi Junction, St Ives and Eastgardens stores, there are a large number of products across bakery, chilled and everyday grocery departments.

This includes a selection of kosher paesanella cheese, labneh, amstelvelder premium cheese, Garlo’s chicken and beef pies, Kariot, Osem Bamba, Osem couscous, Eskal pickled cucumbers, grape juice, Shabbat candles, bagels and challah.

A kosher program has been set up in six Sydney stores to help customers easily identify products, with a KA logo situated on the price tag of every product that is kosher throughout the store. This program is at Double Bay, Bondi Junction, St Ives, Eastgardens, Lane Cove and Neutral Bay.

To celebrate Rosh Hashanah, a number of specials will be on offer at Bondi Junction, Double Bay, Eastgardens, Hillsdale, Lane Cove, Matraville, Northbridge, Neutral Bay, St Ives and Belconnen stores.

This is one of many cultural celebrations at Woolworths throughout the year, with teams supporting a number of significant events across different cultures such as Lunar New Year, Eid Al Adha and Diwali.
