Wrong decision leaves Jewish safety exposed

The Jewish community is left more fearful, more frustrated and questioning its own protection.

The decision to grant bail to the alleged Adass Israel shule firebomber is deeply troubling and sends a dangerous message for those considering carrying out attacks on our community.

The accused is charged with one of the most horrifying antisemitic acts in recent memory; one that shocked our community to its core and made headlines around the world. Prosecutors argued vigorously that he posed an unacceptable risk: with a history of violent offences, a strong forensic case, and the likely trauma his release would inflict on the Jewish community. Yet Magistrate Leon Fluxman, in what he plainly called a “line-ball” decision, accepted strict bail conditions rather than remanding him in custody.

Giovanni Laulu will live with his mother, face a curfew, report to police multiple times a week and is barred from Ripponlea – where the Adass shule is located – and all Jewish places of worship.

While the court may have adhered to legal process, the broader implications for Jewish safety in Australia are not so simple as following a procedure.

Since October 7, 2023, our community has endured a wave of fear caused by violent incidents, threats and rising antisemitism. When those accused of such violence are released back into the community, that sense of vulnerability intensifies. And it lets potential offenders know that the price for violating our safety is not so high.
