After a “tough period” during the pandemic, when most competitions were cancelled, women’s masters weightlifter Leora Yates’ decision to reapply herself at the top level again is reaping rewards.

A 2019 World Masters Weightlifting Championships gold medal winner for Australia, Yates – who runs Bayside Health and Fitness and competes for Melbourne West Barbell Club – is thrilled with her performance last Saturday in the 2022 Victorian Masters championships.

It booked the 46-year-old’s place in September’s Oceania and Australian Masters weightlifting titles.

Although she missed the jerk in two lifts, Yates made four very good lifts, including 76kg in the scratch, 96kg in the clean and jerk, and best of all, lifted clean a total of 100kg.”I was super happy with that, because 100kg is something I’d only done before in training, back in April 2018,” Yates said.

“I think the key was just being consistent, and focused, at training.”

She now looks forward to seeing if her best is yet to come.

“As you get older, sometimes you can kind of think that you have already reached your peak as an athlete, but what my results at this tournament show me is that I can still do PB lifts, and that’s huge.

“As a gym owner, and a female weightlifter, I’m all about promoting women’s health and fitness, and getting women of all ages feeling fitter and stronger.”
