Yechiel Jacobs shines on stage
His videos skyrocketed Jacobs to fame, and he has a global fanbase with over 190,000 Instagram followers.
Instagram star 23-year-old Yechiel Jacobs performed in Melbourne on March 6, where he had over 1000 people laughing out loud, at an event organised by Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, WIZO Victoria, YJP Melbourne and J-United.
Before October 7, Jacobs was a real-estate investor who did not plan to become a comedian. But around a month after Hamas’s October 7 attack, Jacobs decided to make videos for Instagram with the goal of sharing facts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to make people laugh at the same time.
“After October 7, everyone was doom-scrolling. Every video people watched was making them more depressed than the previous one. Then this funny guy pops up and he’s not just being funny – he’s also addressing the idiots making you sad in the first place. You get the facts, but you walk away laughing,” Jacobs stated.
The videos skyrocketed Jacobs to fame, and he has a global fanbase with over 190,000 Instagram followers, and he has performed in the US and Canada.
YJP’s Rabbi Moshe Kahn told the crowd that when they planned the event the question was raised, “A comedian now?” amid sad news from Israel regarding the fate of the hostages.
“There is no coincidence that we are doing this in the month of Adar … The Jewish people, as a nation, we choose life over death, we choose positivity, light, over darkness, tonight by coming we choose to be happy, not because we ignore the pain … because the greatest thing we can do as a people is to celebrate with each other, to choose to be positive, to choose to keep moving forward,” he said.
Jacobs wrote on his Instagram, “Thank you, Melbourne, for an incredible sold-out show with 1,100 people! This was my biggest show yet, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I’m beyond lucky to be in a position where I get to bring people from all over the world together through laughter. Here’s to growing, spreading Jewish pride and joy, selling out even bigger shows and sharing more unforgettable moments.”
