On Tuesday night last week, Mizrachi shule was packed to standing room only for its annual Yom Ha’atzmaut tefillah service which was co-hosted by the Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV), the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria (COSV), Mizrachi and the Bnei Akiva youth movement.

This event is a major annual event in the modern Orthodox religious community and was extremely well attended this year.

The keynote speaker at the event was Rabbi Alan Kimche, the newly appointed rabbi of the Mizrachi community.

Rabbi Yaakov Glasman of St Kilda Shule was responsible for the blowing of the shofar before the declaration “Next Year in Jerusalem.”

“I was absolutely privileged to carry out the sacred task of blowing the shofar at the culmination of a most beautiful and soul-stirring joint tefillah service marking the 75th birthday of the State of Israel,” Rabbi Glasman said.

He added, “The ‘ruach’ (spiritual feeling) in the room was palpable and it was such an incredible honour to have represented both St Kilda Shule and the Rabbinical Council on such a momentous occasion.”
