It was a real family affair in a memorable VAFA round six for AJAX, when siblings Mia, Corey and Loki Zielinski all played for the Jewish club’s senior teams together in a single weekend for the first time.

With the NAB League Girls season now over, the Jackettes recruited Mia – a tall forward for the Sandringham Dragons and Haileybury College, who played her junior footy for AJAX.

She shone in her debut women’s match for the red, white and black, scoring all three of their goals in their 3.9 (27) to 3.3 (21) victory over Glen Eira at Packer Park, including the final match-winning goal with two minutes remaining, when scores were tied.

Being double marked as the match progressed didn’t daunt Mia, who was relentless in applying pressure in the forward pocket.

Other highlights for the Jackettes in the win, which lifted them to third place, included wall-like defence by Jessica Shustin, Maya Burstin and Justine Gabriel, Tia Blum gaining ground along the wing and Samantha Hall having her best game so far this year.

The Jackettes will travel to Hampton Rovers this Saturday.

The Zielinski siblings all played for AJAX Footy Club’s senior teams for the first time in one round last weekend.

In Premier B men’s action, the Jackas moved up to fifth after recording their second straight win – a solid 10.15 (75) to 7.13 (55) result over Old Carey in a game they led from start to finish.

Early goals, and strong defence in the backline by Corey Zielinski, Adam Caplan, Nick Lewis and Hutch Davis, saw AJAX lead by 13 at half-time.

And when Toby Lipton scored a goal just before three-quarter time to extend the lead to 19, an even final quarter by both teams sealed the win.

Leading goalscorers (two each) for AJAX were Lipton, Jake Lew, Kane Nissenbaum and Brandon Joel. Beaumaris will host the Jackas this Saturday.

Loki Zielinski was among AJAX’s best on ground in their men’s Premier B reserve grade match versus Old Carey, which they lost 33-89.

This young development team were in the hunt until midway through the third quarter, before Old Carey scored six of the last seven goals.

And Old Brighton proved too good for AJAX’s Sunday Thirds men’s team, defeating them by 108-45.
