100 days that changed our world

This Sunday marks 100 days since the atrocities of October 7. We remember the lives lost, reiterate our support for Israel’s right to defend itself and call for the release of all remaining hostages.

This Sunday marks 100 days since October 7.

100 days since thousands of Hamas terrorists, with evil in their hearts, shattered the still of a Shabbat and Simchat Torah morning, rampaging through southern Israeli towns and heinously slaughtering 1200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and abducting in excess of 240 more.

100 days since the illusion was shattered that Hamas didn’t want a war or that the only threat to residents of Israel’s south was errant rocket fire.

100 days since Israel was forced to begin a military campaign to restore security that has cost almost 200 soldiers so far while being grotesquely misrepresented in the world’s media, at the United Nations, on university campuses, in public debate and on social media.

100 days since the illusion was shattered for Jews in Australia and worldwide that we are truly accepted in our societies and that antisemitism is only present among extremists.

100 days of weekly demonstrations on the streets of our cities calling for the elimination of our people’s homeland.

100 days of having to explain ourselves, of being targeted, and of waiting for our authorities to take real action against hate preachers who call for our murders or protesters who call for our gassing. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry has been forced to act in this vacuum and while we salute them, it should not have been necessary.

But it’s also 100 days during which our true friends have stood firmly behind us.

It’s 100 days during which we have doubled down on our pride in our identity, defiantly taking to the streets ourselves in solidarity with Israel, the hostages and Jews around the world.

It’s 100 days of opening our hearts and our wallets and giving our time to help our brothers and sisters in Israel.

It’s also 100 days since an Israel that had been bitterly divided over domestic policy found a reason to unite.

It’s 100 days that the people of Israel have a renewed purpose to survive and to thrive.

And with the Jewish world united together and with our Israeli brethren, the nation of Israel will prevail, the hostages will come home and as we always have, the Jews of this world will long outlive our enemies.
