A celebration of music through the ages

Fanshil described the concert as “a celebration of our rich musical heritage that spans from Baal Shem Tov to Broadway, from the most traditional chazanut, to stirring modern Israeli songs, all with the accompaniment of soul-quenching klezmer.

Live at Toorak Synagogue is bringing the big guns for its next concert, presenting Klezmer Cantors and Chutzpah featuring an international line-up celebrating Jewish culture.

The concert will present Jewish music from the Baroque period to the present day, with sensational artists from Israel and across Australian Jewry for this one night only to unite through the universal language.

Israeli cantor and performer Dudu Fisher, who is best known for his portrayal of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables on Broadway, will be back in Melbourne to take part in the concert, and will be joined by a 10-strong Israeli choir, four cantors and a six-piece klezmer band.

Fisher has been to Australia many times. Last year, he joined Melbourne Hebrew Congregation for the High Holy Days as their lead chazan, and will do so again this year.

He acknowledges that his versions of the prayers during services are very different to other cantors.

“My prayers are different I think, than any other cantor or chazan. For me to do a session in the synagogue, it’s like doing a concert, it’s like being on stage,” he told The AJN ahead of his arrival last year.

“I mix music from Phantom of the Opera and from Les Miserables and from Fiddler on the Roof.”

Live at Toorak Synagogue will also feature Dov Farkas from Caulfield Shule, powerful baritone Aaron Max, Sydney’s rising-star tenor Menachem Feldman with the six-piece klezmer band 5th of Nisan and vocal ensemble from Israel, Kolot Min Hashamayim.

According to Live at Yours conductor and pianist Vladimir Fanshil, it is sure to be a wonderful concert.

“It’ll be a celebration of and for our community, with the brightest international and interstate talent,” he said.

Fanshil described the concert as “a celebration of our rich musical heritage that spans from Baal Shem Tov to Broadway, from the most traditional chazanut, to stirring modern Israeli songs, all with the accompaniment of soul-quenching klezmer.

“The dome of Toorak Synagogue might end up erupting with joy.”

Klezmer Cantors and Chutzpah is at Toorak Synagogue on September 20 at 7pm. For more information and tickets, visit liveatyours.com.au
