A celebration of one million meals

Community food rescue and relief organisation, FoodFilled, has reached an incredible milestone – one million meals redistributed to families experiencing food insecurity across Melbourne.

What began as an idea to rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill, has grown into a movement.

Since 2018, FoodFilled has redirected over 500,000 kilograms of surplus food, collected by more than 1500 volunteers, and distributed through 177 local food relief agencies.

“Reaching this milestone is exciting, but more importantly, it’s a reflection of the incredible generosity and commitment of our community and it symbolises an impact felt by so many people,” said Rob Miller, CEO of FoodFilled.

“Every volunteer, donor and partner has played a role. It’s a testament to the community.”

The milestone highlights the dual impact of FoodFilled’s work: social and environmental.

Families across Melbourne have received vital food support, while significant quantities of edible food have been diverted from landfill, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable food practices.

This milestone was celebrated by the FoodFilled community recently at their HQ, a hub shared with community partner Flying Fox, where a number of other non-profit organisations and social enterprises collaborate.

Looking to the future, FoodFilled aims to expand partnerships and offer even more opportunities for people to engage.

FoodFilled also hopes to inspire a broader cultural shift towards reducing food waste and supporting communities in need.

Their achievement is made possible by generous supporters, and the combined effort of retail partners donating surplus food, volunteers collecting and distributing it, and local agencies ensuring it reaches those who need it most.

FoodFilled continues to call on the community, businesses and schools to join in and support, whether through volunteering, donating surplus food, or contributing to fundraising initiatives.
