IT was a proud day for AJAX Footy Club at its Albert Park home last Sunday when relatives of the club’s founding father, Daryl Cohen, joined club officials, players, and supporters for the official opening of the Daryl Cohen Rooms – a brilliant new facility adjoining the David Mandie Pavilion.

Cohen was the driving force behind the formation of the club and its admission into the Victorian Amateur Football Association in 1957.

He played 108 games for the Jackas until 1965, was head coach from 1975 to 1977 when the club was promoted from E to A grade, he served as club president, and was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame and Maccabi Victoria’s Hall of Fame, later posthumously elevated to legend status in 2022.

The Daryl Cohen Rooms include a large unisex change room, bathrooms, a gym, coaches’ room and physio room.

It was funded by the Victorian government, Parks Victoria, a generous contribution from Hannah Cohen and the Cohen family, plus a successful members-driven donor plaque program.

In round four VAFA action last weekend, AJAX won two of four matches.

Their women’s division 3 side won their second game of the season, defeating Bulleen Templestowe 4.6 (30) to 3.4 (22), with Caitlin Boylan top-scoring with two goals, and Lorri Gunn brilliant in defence.

The Jackas men’s Sunday Thirds team enjoyed their third win, by 35 points over Marcellin, celebrating Eli Adelist’s milestone 100th game in style.

Their men’s Premier B and development (B reserves) teams both lost to strong St Bernards sides.
