On Sunday, April 28, The AJN’s graphic designer Vivienne Napolitano and assistant art director Adriana Alvarez completed the Australia 108 Stair Challenge participating in Australia’s biggest stair climb.

Napolitano achieved eighth place in the women’s section and third place in her age group category (50-59) with a time of 14 minutes and 10 seconds climbing 1700 steps, 96 floors and 317 metres of vertical height.

“I enjoy the challenge and Giant Steps is a very worthy charity to raise money for. They support people with autism, which is a subject close to my heart because it’s something that affects many friends and family,” Napolitano said.

She prepared herself for the event by increasing her pace on her StairMaster equipment and she teaches group fitness classes and enjoys all forms of physical challenges.

Alvarez said she was just happy to make it to the top. It was her first time attempting the challenge however she once completed climbing the Eureka Tower.

“It was the tallest building in Melbourne at the time but now the Australia 108 tower has taken that title,” Alvarez said. “Viv encouraged me to take the challenge. I know I am not in her class, but I did my best and next year I will give it another go, try to better my time.”

The 100-storey Australia 108 is the southern hemisphere’s tallest building by roof height. Gold Coast’s Q1 is taller when including its spire. At 318.7 metres high, the residential building’s 96 floors surpass the Eureka Tower by 21.4 metres.

Giant Steps Australia was established in 1995 to provide world-class education services and support to children and adults on the autism spectrum to ensure they can reach their full potential while giving families support and guidance.

Giant Steps’ emphasis on building the skills of its staff, understanding the challenges each of its students faces, and working with and supporting parents and caregivers ensures the best possible outcome for students and families.

Fees are not charged for its school programs, ensuring that Giant Steps is open to students from all socio-economic backgrounds. Consequently, only 10 per cent of its growing enrolment applications are admitted due to lack of space and funding.
