CANADIAN poker star Ami Barer has pocketed a cool $1.6 million following his victory over compatriot and fellow Jew Sorel Mizzi at the Aussie Millions Poker Championships at Crown Casino recently.
Barer, 22, outlasted more than 650 competitors at the week-long event, which culminated in a thrilling final table made up of the world’s top players, including USA’s Darren Rabinowitz who placed fourth overall.
In the end, it was Barer who managed to sweep his opponents aside, beating Mizzi, who walked away with $1 million himself, in the heads-up battle between the final two players.
“I knew it would be a long day,” Barer said in the wake of his victory.
“It started with a lot of chips on the table and there were a lot of tal- ented, young players and I was the luckiest one.
“The heads-up match was short and sweet, where I managed to get hands when I needed to and I didn’t have to face the wrath of Sorel.”
Barer’s maiden major title win was also the first time a Canadian had taken out the prestigious event.
