Fundraising for Bowel Cancer

Another personal milestone to share

Five months ago, Asher Berlinski set himself a challenge to run 100 kilometres (45 laps) around Caulfield Park to raise $10,000 for Bowel Cancer Australia.

On May 5 Berlinski proudly said, “Today I can happily say we did it in 15 hours, 29,500 steps and raised $15,000 for Bowel Cancer Australia. I want to emphasise ‘we’ as there was something so special about the community coming together for a cause so close to my heart. The atmosphere was electric for 15 hours and kept me going.”

The challenge was so extreme that Berlinski was not sure anyone thought it was possible. He did not until he ticked off lap after lap, and kilometre after kilometre with his friends alongside him, running further than they had done before.

Something clicked when all the runners started counting down the laps, the belief from that point grew with each step he took.

“Running may sound like an individual sport, but this showed that it takes a team to accomplish big goals,” he said.

In 2019 Berlinski dedicated his ironman efforts to Bentley Klein, who bravely faced the challenges of bowel cancer. This year he undertook another challenge, dedicating his feat to the Lipton family and honouring the memory of Tamara (Tom) Lipton.

In January 2020, Tamara was diagnosed with metastatic colorectal cancer (stage four bowel cancer). She fought an incredible battle for just over two years, going through countless bouts of chemotherapy and a lot of non-traditional treatments.

She hated to be seen as an inspiration to others, but to her family, friends and wider community (through her Instagram account, My Crazy Bowel) she was nothing other than that.

“The stories of Bentley and Tom serve as powerful reminders of strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Now, I hope that I can inspire people to try no matter how hard or crazy they may seem. Your mind is stronger than you know,” he said.
