Anything but an ordinary day
The Australian Jewish Historical Society said it was delighted with the response to its 'ordinary day in extraordinary times' call out.
MEMBERS of the community overwhelmingly responded to a call from the Australian Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), in conjunction with JCA, to photograph “an ordinary day in extraordinary times” on August 27.
The AJHS asked the community to take a photo between sunrise and sunset that depicted their typical Friday in lockdown.
Noting how we look back now on images from 50 and 100 years ago, AJHS president Peter Philippsohn said the thinking behind the idea was to give people in the future an opportunity to look back on the present.
“We were delighted with the response of people putting to record for posterity what life was like during COVID,” he said.
“The variety of images was outstanding and gave a real cross-section of what happened and we hope in 50 to 100 years it will shed a light on what 2020-2021 was like in our community.”
Photos submitted included families celebrating Shabbat in isolation, community members in masks and parents home-schooling their children.
The photos will be catalogued by AJHS to become part of the historical record.
In other AJHS news, more than 80 years of the organisation’s journals are now available on Trove as part of its project with the national libraries of Australia and Israel to digitise Australian Jewish newspapers.
