Applications open for philanthropy fellowship

The annual philanthropy fellowship run by UIA NSW and JCA has been renamed in honour of Stanley Roth, the Sydney communal leader and philanthropist who died unexpectedly at the end of 2025.

Now in its sixth year, the Stanley Roth Philanthropy Fellowship is a five-session program for Jewish adults aged 25 to 40, run in partnership with Australian Jewish Funders (AJF).

Applications are open for the 2026 intake, which begins in August.

Roth was widely respected across Sydney’s Jewish community for his values-driven approach to giving and communal leadership. Organisers said the renaming reflects his belief that philanthropy extends beyond financial contributions to encompass time, skills and personal commitment.

The program guides participants through expert-led sessions covering trends in philanthropy, innovative funding models, and challenges facing Jewish communities, including the rise of antisemitism. Participants also gain access to a network of established communal leaders working in the philanthropy space.

It concludes with a “Night of Giving” in which the cohort collectively decides which projects to fund, putting into practice the principles explored across the program.

Organisers describe the fellowship’s framework as built around the “five Ts” of philanthropic engagement: time, talent, treasure, ties and testimony. The aim is to equip a new generation of Jewish adults with the tools and networks to contribute to communal life in ways that go beyond cheque-writing.

Adam Kaye, a participant in the 2025 NSW fellowship, said the program changed the way he thought about giving.

“The fellowship is a crash course in becoming a more informed, thoughtful and effective giver,” Kaye said.

“It’s for those who want to have an impact on the future of our Jewish community and the community at large. It’s about giving your time, resources and dedicating yourself and your skillset to helping others.”

UIA Victoria is separately running the 2026 UIA Vic Young Leadership Philanthropy Fellowship in partnership with AJF across six sessions in August and September.
