A SYMPHONY orchestra, cantors and a rock star share the bimah in a synagogue. It sounds like the start of a joke, but thanks to a fortuitous turn of events, Sydney’s Central Synagogue has just announced Australian rock icon Jimmy Barnes will make a surprise addition to the “Symphony for the Soul” concert on August 20.

Shimon Farkas, cantor of Central Synagogue and the event’s creator, told The AJN he was thrilled Barnes had volunteered his vocal talents for the evening amid his busy concert schedule.

“I’m very excited that he will be singing at Symphony For The Soul. It’s going to be a very eclectic concert with his participation.”

Though no specific details have been released yet, it is understood that Barnes will sing together with the cantors and on his own. Barnes is scheduled to rehearse with the cantors early next week.

“Everyone is excited about it,” Farkas added. “What he sings we will keep as a surprise until the night.”

Barnes agreed to participate in the concert after being introduced to Farkas by Rabbi Mendel Kastel at the Hakoah Club earlier this year.

The concert will feature cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, accompanied by father-and-son duo Shimon and Dov Farkas, Yehuda Niasoff and Bob Borowsky.

The concert will be accompanied by the Sydney International Orchestra and conducted by Dr Mordechai Sobol -— a guest conductor of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Symphony for the Soul” is on Thursday, August 20, at 7.30pm at Sydney’s Central Synagogue. Bookings: (02) 9389 5622.
