SUPERCARS

Holden’s last climb at Bathurst

IT was the end of an era for the Holden Commodore in Supercars’ biggest annual race, the Bathurst 1000, at Mount Panorama last Sunday, with the famous red lion set to transition to the Chevrolet Camaro in 2023.

Fittingly, Shane van Gisbergen and his Red Bull Ampol racing team co-driver Garth Tander crossed the finish line first in their Holden.

There were also good results in Commodores for Erebus Motorsport, a team owned by Betty Klimenko, who is Jewish, and this year was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to motorsport, and to charitable organisations.

Brodie Kostecki and co-driver David Russell started for Erebus in ninth spot, but drove smartly amid the race’s eight separate safety car disruptions, to finish fourth.

The team’s other two cars, driven by Will Brown/Jack Perkins, and Richie Stanaway/Greg Murphy, finished 10th and 11th respectively, in the field of 28.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Matzah ball soup to the rescue

THE Major League Baseball (MLB) division play-offs began on October 12, and if the Houston Astros win through to the World Series, their fans can thank team manager Dusty Baker – along with freshly baked challah, smoked fish, rugelach and several litres of matzah ball soup!

Baker stopped by Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen in central Houston just before Yom Kippur ended, to load up on food to help Jewish star player Alex Bregman break the Yom Kippur fast.

He left the deli with enough to feed the entire team.

Baker later told reporters he also gave matzah ball soup to pitcher Luis Garcia, who had been feeling ill.

“He [Garcia] is Venezuelan, so he’s probably never had matzah ball soup,” Baker said.

The Astros begin their American League Championship with a play-off series starting on October 12 [Australian time], against Seattle.

Bregman, who did play on Yom Kippur against the Phillies, enters the post-season with 23 home runs, and 93 runs batted in.

There are more Jewish players involved in the division finals.

The Cleveland Guardians, featuring Eli Morgan, face a New York Yankees squad containing Scott Effross and Harrison Bader.

Garrett Stubbs and his Philadelphia Eagles take on defending champions the Atlanta Braves, featuring star pitcher Max Fried.

And Kevin Pillar may return from injury in time to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their series against San Diego.
