The “Australians Standing Up” event at Belrose Hotel in Sydney’s Northern Beaches on July 29 was a timely reminder that concern for Australia’s future extends well beyond any one community, panellist Michael Gencher said.

The panel featured Gencher – executive officer of Stand With Us Australia and the preselected Liberal Party candidate for Pittwater – 2023 Foundation founder and retired ADF Colonel Michael Scott, and Hunters Hill councillor Carol Tannous Sleiman, who is president of the NSW Liberal Party’s Women’s Council. of Lebanese Christian heritage.

Scott provided unique insight into public safety, extremism, national resilience and the broader geopolitical context shaping modern security challenges.

The evening finished with a Q&A session, and concluding remarks from Indigenous leader and former ALP president Warren Mundine.

Gencher said the evening provided an opportunity for thoughtful discussion about the direction of the country, the role of political leaders and the media, and the responsibility shared by every part of the broader community.

“It was encouraging to see so many friends and allies who understand that the challenges facing the Jewish community are part of a broader threat to Australian values, social cohesion and democratic freedoms.

“Governments, the media, community leaders and ordinary Australians all have a role to play.

“Protecting the character of our country requires people from every background to stand up, speak openly and take responsibility for the society we are shaping together.”
