BARRY Kave broke a combined Maccabi-AJAX Cricket Club bowling record on Sunday when he took his 866th wicket, playing for the club men’s Third X1 in a match against Carnegie.

The match saw the 72-year-old cricketer take took two wickets for 12 runs, taking his total number of wickets to 867.

Kave told The AJN he has been playing cricket for the club for 57 years, “and there’s not too many my age still going around in the game”.

“It was great to break the record, but you never really have a clue when it’s going to come,” he said.

“As a bowler, when you get handed the ball by the captain, you just try your best to get wickets.”

Kave paid respect to the previous record-holder, Ernie Adler.

“Ernie has since passed away, but I knew him very well, and in fact, I used to play cricket with him when I was a kid.”

For the record, Carnegie won the match by 11 runs, but Kave was the real winner on the day.
