BROADWAY star Mandy Patinkin arrived in Sydney this week ahead of his Australian tour with acclaimed singer and actress Patti LuPone. Appearing together for the first time since the original production of Evita, in which they both won Tony Awards, the pair will perform a collection of the greatest songs written for the stage.
Patinkin, who was born in Chicago, but now lives in New York City, said he was thrilled to be returning to Australia for the first time since his 2006 tour.
“[Patti and I] put together a very entertaining, fun evening that is a figurative journey of two souls using familiar and unfamiliar materials both spoken and sung,” he told The AJN.
“We do it because it’s the thing we love the most to do and it’s a total escape for us.”
Patinkin was first introduced to Broadway when his father took him to see two shows as a bar mitzvah gift. Soon after he joined the theatre group at the Young Men’s Jewish Council Youth Centre.
Patinkin, who survived prostate cancer in 2004, champions human rights, particularly in the Middle East. He is involved with organisations such as Peace Now and Israel’s Arava Institute of Environmental Studies.
An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin is at Hamer Hall, Victorian Arts Centre, on July 21-22. Bookings: www.ticketmaster.com.au
