Buildings throughout the world glowed blue and white last night to celebrate Israel’s 75th year of independence.

Among those lit up, which included the Empire State Building in New York, were iconic buildings in Canberra – the National Carillon, John Gorton Building and Old Parliament House.

In a post shared on social media, the National Captial Authority wrote, “The lighting of the Australian capital with the colours of the Israeli flag indicates the strong friendship between Australia and Israel which will continue to flourish in the years to come! ”

Celebrating the light-ups, the Embassy of Israel shared some pictures of the buildings in real time on their own Facebook page, wishing the community Happy Yom Ha’atzmaut from Australia’s capital.

Meanwhile in New York, the Empire State Building lit up in honour of Israel from midnight to sunrise.

Along with the Empire State Building, several others were lit up around the city, including City Hall and other municipal buildings.

“On Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, we celebrate freedom for those in Israel and around the world,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. “New York City stands side by side with our neighbours, the largest Jewish population in the world outside of Israel, to honour three-quarters of a century promoting peace and security in the Middle East and hope and opportunity across the globe.”

Niagara Falls was lit blue and white to celebrate, as was San Francisco’s iconic Transamerica Pyramid Tower for the first time.
