Calling all young card sharps

ROSH Hashanah may still be a couple of months away but The Australian Jewish News is already planning to make it an extra sweet new year for one lucky youngster.

ROSH Hashanah may still be a couple of months away but The Australian Jewish News is already planning to make it an extra sweet new year for one lucky youngster.

This week marks the launch of our Design a Rosh Hashanah Card competition and there’s a fantastic honour in store for the overall winner.

Open to children between the ages of five and 12, the winning entry will be turned into the official AJN card for 5771, which will be sent to a whole host of communal and political dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of Australia, the President of Israel and the Queen.

But the prestige of your artwork adorning these VIP mantelpieces isn’t the only prize up for grabs.
Thanks to our friends at the Sydney Jewish Museum and the Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne, winners and runners-up from each state, together with their families, will be feted at special receptions where their entries will be on display.

A selection of the best entries will also be published in The AJN‘s Rosh Hashanah supplement at the beginning of September.

Entries must be submitted on an A4 piece of paper. They can be in pen, pencil, crayon or paint. The overall winner will be chosen by a judging panel comprising AJN arts editors Danny Gocs and Adam Kamien, and art experts from both museums.

Zeddy Lawrence, national editor of The AJN, said: “Earlier this year, we uncovered an incredible wealth of musical talent within the community with our Ghetto Blasterz competition. Now we want to give young, aspiring artists the chance to showcase their abilities as well.”

“We are delighted to partner with The AJN in this exciting venture,” said Norman Seligman, CEO of the Sydney Jewish Museum. “This is a great opportunity to engage with a younger audience to stimulate their creative interpretation of this important Jewish festival.”

The sentiment was echoed by Rebecca Forgasz, director of the The Jewish Museum of Australia, who said: “The Jewish Museum of Australia is delighted to support this special Rosh Hashanah competition encouraging young artistic talent in the community.”

The closing date for entries is August 13.
