FUNDRAISER FOR HATZOLAH

Chana to run marathon with pride

Schulman: "I know about Hatzolah, and feel that if my father had access to an incredible service like it, he may still be alive now."

Three worthy reasons are motivating Chana Schulman, 48, to run a marathon on March 3 around Tuggerah Lake.

As a resident of the Upper Hunter region of NSW, a former soldier in the army, and a proud Chabadnik, Schulman reflects the diversity within Australian Jewry today.

Firstly, Schulman wants to run it as a celebration for losing 45kg to restore her health, following rapid weight gain associated partly with suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in recent years.

Schulman chose the marathon’s date to coincide with the Yahrzeit for her beloved father Yohanan, to honour his life.

Yohanan died from a heart attack in 2021, aged 84, where he lived in Gloucestershire, England, from complications from COVID-19.

Finally, Schulman set up a fundraising page on the Charidy website, to raise money for Hatzolah Sydney.

“That’s because I know about Hatzolah, and feel that if my father had access to an incredible service like it, he may still be alive now.”

Schulman will be supported by her Jewish friend from the Central Coast, Alizah Johnston, who will drive along to set up refreshment stops every 10km.

Her husband Mark, and the couple’s personal trainer, will run the marathon with Schulman.

“It’s so great to have them on board,” Schulman said.

“I first met Alizah at a Chanukah celebration in Newcastle, and most recently, as proud Jews and Zionists, we attended a pro-Israel rally together at Moore Park.”

Schulman said she plans to run the marathon, “proudly wearing a shirt with a large Magen David on the front”.
