Children’s books can provide comfort

PJ Library notes that although children and students look to parents for guidance in challenging times, sometimes parents are not sure what to say.

PJ Library Australia – which provides more than 4000 members the monthly gift of high-quality Jewish books for their young children – has put useful resources, links and recommended book lists on its website and Facebook page, that could help to provide light during a dark time for the community.

It has categories of books and new additions to its library collection, that offer comfort and reassurance, beautiful books celebrating Jewish customs and traditions, and joyful picture and middle grade books with storylines set in Israel, representing the diversity and beauty of Israeli culture, society and nature.

Through PJ Library, it’s easy to meet Israeli families and children through the vehicle of stories, attend a local storytelling session, tune into a helpful webinar, virtually tour a shuk (marketplace), listen to Israeli and Jewish music from the audio collection, and tune into a new season of podcasts.

The ‘How to Talk to Kids’ guides feature curated resources and advice from experts about how to address challenging subjects in an age-appropriate manner.

Processing the horrific attack by Hamas on Israel is difficult, so explaining it to a child can feel almost impossible.

It can be helpful, PJ Library explains, to take cues from your child – model calm, be reassuring, help children express their feelings, and be developmentally appropriate.

If you are struggling, as many are, to navigate conversations about events in Israel with your children or grandchildren, links and resources are available on the PJ Library website that may help.
